The Foundations of Overflow Church

GRACE

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Mankind is incapable of saving itself and is totally dependent upon God for its salvation. God has provided that salvation through the work of His Son, Jesus, on the cross. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Grace is God's Divine Influence upon our lives, through which we obtain salvation and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. By grace our mindsets, attitudes, behaviors, and habits will change to reflect those of our Savior, resulting in a holy lifestyle. (Titus 2:11-12)

It is through faith in the redeeming work of Jesus Christ and His cross, the shedding of His blood, that we receive grace. By that grace, we are reconciled. (Colossians 1:19-20) 

LOVE

It is the motivation of God for His dealings with men. (John 3:16)

It is upon love that the commandments of God are founded. (Matthew 22:37-40) 

Love is the motivation for every ministry of the church. To love God with all that is in us and to love our neighbor as ourselves is the highest call. Jesus set the standard of love expressed. (John 15:12-13)

WORD

We believe the Bible, in its entirety, to be the revelation of God to man. We believe it is true as God intended it to be presented. We believe the New Testament to be the witness of the covenant of grace we have received in Jesus, and the church must form its doctrine and government from this covenant. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God.  (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Every believer should read, meditate upon and pray over the written Word of God in a consistent manner, in order to become a reflection of it in his or her daily life.  (2 Timothy 2:15)

The Bible records the promises of God, and each believer is wise to know and pursue them.

POWER

Along with His Word, God has given us the infilling and indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, to empower us to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8), to glorify Jesus and teach us what He has spoken (John 16:13-14), and to grant us the Gifts of the Spirit to edify the church. (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).

COMMUNITY

Coming into a relationship with Jesus establishes us as part of His church. We become citizens of the Kingdom of God and each of us a part of the body of Christ. Each believer adds their part to the whole for the good of the whole. (1 Corinthians 1:12)

The Bible declares that we are a community and that we ought to come together often for the purposes of worship, prayer, discipleship, service, and encouragement. (Hebrews 10:24-25, Colossians 3:15-17)

As the body of Christ, we have the duty and privilege to reach out with the message of the Gospel, as we attempt to meet the spiritual and tangible needs of people.  (Matthew 25:37-40)

INFLUENCE

Jesus has called all believers to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16) for the purpose of displaying God's better ways of doing all things that pertain to life and society. The church is designed to be the salt of the earth, adding the flavor and the preservative of God's Kingdom into every facet of life. We are also the light of the world. We are to shine the light of the Gospel of the Kingdom into every dark area of this fallen world. As the children of God, it is our role to be God's influencers upon every segment of society.
